Our patients deserve the best. At Dolphins Optometrists, we are committed to providing the information needed to make an informed decision when it comes to contact lenses. Contact lenses provide benefits that eyeglasses simply can’t, from increased comfort and convenience to improved vision. But how do contact lenses work? What benefits do they provide and what are a few of the limitations? Here, we discuss all this and more so our patients know exactly what to expect when considering contact lenses as their preferred choice for vision correction.

Exploring the Benefits of Contact Lenses

How Do Contact Lenses Work?

Contact lenses are made from soft materials that sit directly on the surface of your eyes. They work by refracting and directing light onto your retina, correcting any refractive errors you may have. Unlike traditional glasses, contact lenses don’t weigh down on your face and leave marks or smudges. Instead, they sit comfortably on the surface of your eyes without affecting your natural vision.

Benefits of Contact Lenses

Contact lenses provide numerous benefits to wearers.

Comfort

Contact lenses provide increased comfort and are much lighter than eyeglasses. They conform to the shape of your eyes, and you can even forget they’re there. Unlike eyeglasses, which can smudge and leave marks on your face, contact lenses won’t interfere with any of your activities.

Improved Vision

Contact lenses correct refractive errors that cause blurred vision. Contact lenses also provide a wide field of view so you don’t have to worry about missing important visual cues in the periphery. This means you may see even better than when wearing glasses.

Lifestyle

Contact lenses allow you to continue with your lifestyle without worry. You can, play sports and participate in physical activities while wearing contact lenses. This makes life far less stressful, as contact lens wearers do not need to worry about wearing glasses, or having to deal with reduced vision by removing them. Night Lenses offer an added advantage of being able to partake in water activities such as swimming without needing to wear glasses or normal day time contact lenses.

Limitations of Contact Lenses

Although contact lenses provide benefits, they are not suitable for everyone and come with several limitations.

Maintenance

Contact lenses require proper maintenance and care. For re-useable lenses, this includes cleaning and storing them regularly as well as replacing them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Without proper maintenance, contact lenses can cause irritation or infections which could lead to damage or other serious complications.

Vision Changes & Dry Eyes

The shape of your eyes may change over time, which could affect the way your contacts fit and how well they work. Additionally, some people experience dry eyes when wearing contacts. This can lead to redness, irritation, and blurry vision if it is not managed properly.

Cost

Contact lenses  vary in cost. Additionally, contact lens solutions (if required) can be pricey and need to be replaced regularly.  If contact lenses are more suited to your lifestyle, the ease of using them can be worth the cost alone. Obviously, not all contact lenses are the same, so be sure to discuss options with your optometrist before making a decision.
