In today’s article, we will discuss the importance of tears and how our specialist tear clinic can help you protect your eyes for years to come.
WHAT ARE TEARS?
Tears are a natural response to protect the eye. They are produced when the eye is irritated or when we cry. The tears flow from the tear ducts and help to keep the eye moist. They also help to flush out any foreign objects or irritants that may be in the eye.
There are three main types of tears:
The first type of tear is the basal tear. This is the tear that is produced constantly to keep the eye moist. It is made up of water, electrolytes, and lipids.
The second type of tear is the reflex tear. This tear is produced in response to an irritant, such as dust or smoke. It is made up of water, electrolytes, and antibodies.
The third type of tear is the emotional tear. This tear is produced in response to strong emotions, such as sadness or joy. It is made up of water, electrolytes, and proteins.
THE IMPORTANCE OF TEARS AND WHY?
Tears are composed of three layers: an inner layer of mucus, a middle aqueous layer, and an outer lipid layer. The mucus layer helps to spread the tear over the surface of the eye and also helps provide resistance to evaporation. The middle aqueous layer contains water, electrolytes, enzymes, and proteins that maintain healthy eyesight. The outer lipid layer prevents evaporation of the tear by providing a barrier against the wind and other environmental factors.
The three layers of tears are produced by different glands. The inner mucus layer is produced by the conjunctival goblet cells. The middle aqueous layer is secreted by the lacrimal gland, which is located above the outer corner of each eye. The outer lipid layer is provided by the meibomian glands, which are located along the eyelids.
Tears play an important role in maintaining healthy eyesight. They provide lubrication and keep the surface of the eye clean and free of debris. You need to understand the importance of tears because our tears contain antibodies that help protect against infection, and without tears this cannot happen.
PROBLEMS WITH TEARS
Problems with tears can derive from several different sources. For example, dry eye syndrome is a condition in which the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears that are produced are of poor quality. This can lead to irritation, redness, and pain. The importance of tears cannot be ignored. It is important to get checked if you believe you have an issue such as dry eye syndrome.
Other conditions that can cause problems with tears include blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and keratitis. Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids that can be caused by bacteria or allergies. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye. Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea, which is the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye.
DRY EYE SYNDROME
Tears play an important role in keeping the eye healthy and comfortable. If you have a problem with your tears, you may experience a dry eye syndrome. This is a condition where the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears are not of the right quality. Dry eye syndrome can cause discomfort, redness, and also a feeling of grittiness in the eyes. It can also lead to inflammation and damage to the cornea.
If you think you may have dry eye syndrome, you should see an optometrist for a tear evaluation. A tear evaluation involves looking at the quantity and quality of your tears. The optometrist will also check for any underlying conditions that may be causing your dry eye syndrome. Treatments for dry eye syndrome include artificial tears, immunosuppressive drugs, tear duct plugs, surgery or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment.

TEAR CLINIC ASSESSMENT
The initial assessment at our tear clinic is an in-depth and detailed examination. Firstly, we consider factors such as your lifestyle, diet, and surrounding environmental factors, as well as general health. Following this, we progress to examining the eye itself. Our tear clinic has sophisticated equipment which allows us to assess the quality of your natural tears. Additionally, our eyelid cleansing device (BlephEx) is then used to cleanse any excess oils or debris from your eyelids and lashes.
Once the initial assessment is complete, our optometrists will be able to provide you with a tear clinic action plan. This may involve tear ointments or gels, tear supplements, and advice on how to manage your environment and lifestyle to help improve the quality of your tears. Additionally, we may also recommend IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment for more effective management of your symptoms.
Often, eyes will require regular treatment. Therefore, we will likely prescribe multiple sessions to monitor the health of your eyes. This allows us to adapt and analyse the treatment plans to therefore ensure they are effective in combating the issue and helping your eyes. We are proud of our tear clinic as we constantly advance the treatments available to ensure the best results.
