AMD is a leading cause of vision loss for people aged 65 and older
Treatment with the Valeda Light Delivery System
Up until now, there has been no treatment for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (Dry AMD), instead focusing on slowing down the progression of the disease with dietary supplements and lifestyle changes.
However, at Dolphins Optometrists, we are thrilled to introduce the first treatment for Dry AMD . The Valeda Light Delivery System (VLDS) uses photobiomodulation (PBM) to provide a safe, non-invasive, and painless treatment for Dry AMD.

Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) explained
Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (Dry AMD) is a prevalent eye condition linked to aging, marked by the degeneration of the macula, which plays a crucial role in central vision.
With this type of AMD, the macular cells deteriorate gradually, resulting in a gradual decline in central vision. Dry AMD is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK, affecting over 700,000 people.
Patients with AMD may experience the following:
Gradual decrease in vision: As AMD progresses, central focus clarity may decrease, leading to blurred, distorted, or lost vision. This decline can significantly impact activities such as driving, recognizing faces, reading, watching TV, and daily tasks.
Impaired depth perception: Difficulty in accurately judging distances can increase the risk of accidents and falls. S
Sensitivity to changes in light levels: Adapting to varying light conditions and increased sensitivity to glare can be challenging.
Increased reliance on brighter lighting: Tasks like reading, cooking, and other activities may require brighter lighting due to declining visual acuity and contrast vision.

Valeda Light Delivery System Explained
The Valeda light therapy harnesses various wavelengths of LED light to target cells and boost their activity, thereby slowing down the degenerative process.
Through enhancing energy production within the eye’s cells, Valeda improves their efficiency in performing their functions.
This promotion of cellular health is essential for sustaining optimal eye health.
Patients usually undergo treatments three times a week for a three-week cycle. which is repeated three times a year.
Are You Suitable for VLDS?
Valeda is recommended for individuals with Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
Patients undergoing therapy should have received a diagnosis of Dry AMD from an eye care professional.
If you are interested in learning more about treatment with the VLDS, you can schedule an initial consultation with one of our specialists.
During this consultation, we will have a thorough discussion about your diagnosis and work together to create a personalised treatment plan.

How we treat you with VLDS
If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you must remove them before the Valeda treatment. There is no need for dilating eye drops for this treatment. This ensures a more comfortable experience.
The VLDS treatment is conducted by our qualified and professional team here at Dolphins, and follows a straightforward process that typically takes less than 5 minutes per eye.
You will be comfortably seated in front of the VLDS device. During the treatment you will be exposed to yellow and red lights with open and closed eyes.
After treatment, you may experience temporary coloured afterimages for a short time. This is a normal reaction with no lasting effects. After this you can resume your regular daily activities, including driving.
Expectations of VLDS Treatment
Clinical studies over a 2 year period demonstrated over 70% of the treatment group gained and maintained 1 line of visual improvement. Studies also show that the VLDS treatment improves the physical appearance of the macula on OCT scanning, which we will conduct yearly to monitor progress.
At Dolphins Optometrists we would be happy to discuss the clinical trials around the VLDS in more detail, just let us know at your initial consultation.

VLDS Treatment Costs
The initial treatment cycle at Dolphins Optometrists costs £1500 plus initial consultation. This is for 9 sessions (three times a week for three weeks).
Subsequent treatment cycles will be available at a cost of £1500.

P. C.2024-10-15Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I went in for an eye test and to have new lenses put into my current frames. The services was second to none, the eye exam lasted almost 2 hours and had tests that I had never seen or heard of before. Yes it does cost more than a high street exam but having tried all the high street providers it is way beyond what they offer. Lenses wise I went for Rodenstock biometric lenses, again so beyond what i have ever gotten from a high street chain and won't look back. Not cheap but the service and the quality you recieve makes it incredibly good value and I will be returning as to my wife. I lost my driving glasses, and using my existing prescription, Dolphins had an emergency replacement pair ready the following afternoon! Amazing service. Sara Hopkins2023-03-12Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I see so many people with unflattering, badly fitting frames and wibbly wobbly lenses that I need a pack of Dolphin stickers please. I could then slap them on unsuspecting passersby and fellow queue-ers and send them to Umesh, Julian, Mandy and the team for some genuine care and attention to detail. Dolphin Optometrists are not tied to any one supplier and can recommend what is tailored to your requirements, however severe or complex your prescription might be. They have the most up-to-date equipment and you receive a fabulously thorough check and test from Umesh. Then Julian sorts your glasses order out with humour and professionalism. The ‘girls’ on reception are very friendly and welcoming and nothing seems too much trouble for them Lisa Arthur-Bridge-Butler2022-06-24Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. If I could have given more stars - I would have. This is why we must support independent businesses - their level of knowledge and care is exceptional. I just experienced the most thorough and detailed examination in my 40 years of visiting opticians. Plus, I learned so much - for example one test showed that my eyes were on the dry side, and eye drops would be useful even if I don't have symptoms. I saw the surface of my cornea after laser surgery 25 years ago which explained how new contact lenses would fit and was advised to get a health test after a detailed image of the back of my eye (which was also shown to me) indicated a possible early issue. Outstanding customer service. Utterly blown away. Oh and they have a car park right outside too. Exceptional Jo Main2021-03-05Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Umesh and all his team are so helpful and professional. Nothing is too much trouble for them, and the level of service they give is absolutely second to none. Umesh has a great range of specialised instruments available for diagnostic purposes. Their covid19 precautions are well thought through, making visiting a safe and pleasant experience. Highly recommend! Ian Scott2020-09-01Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very helpful, fixed a slightly bent glasses.
