Valeda Light Therapy

Up until now, treating Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (Dry AMD) has mainly focused on dietary supplements and lifestyle changes.

However, at Dolphins Optometrists, we are thrilled to introduce the latest advancement in Dry AMD treatment. The Valeda Light Delivery System (LDS) provides a safe, non-invasive, and painless therapy, making it the first permanent treatment option for Dry AMD.

Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) explained

Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a prevalent eye condition linked to aging, marked by the degeneration of the macula, which plays a crucial role in central vision. With this type of AMD, the macular cells deteriorate gradually, resulting in a gradual decline in central vision.

Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration is, in fact, the primary cause of central vision loss in individuals aged 50 and older, affecting more than 700,000 individuals in the UK.

The gradual progression of Dry AMD results in a decline in vision over time.

Patients with AMD may experience the following:

Gradual decrease in vision: As AMD progresses, central focus clarity may decrease, leading to blurred, distorted, or lost vision. This decline can significantly impact activities such as driving, recognizing faces, reading, watching TV, and daily tasks.

Challenges with reading, watching TV, and driving: Decreased ability to distinguish textures and contrasts can make navigating uneven surfaces and stairs difficult, increasing the risk of falls.

Impaired depth perception: Difficulty in accurately judging distances can increase the risk of accidents and falls. Sensitivity to changes in light levels: Adapting to varying light conditions and increased sensitivity to glare can be challenging.

Increased reliance on brighter lighting: Tasks like reading, cooking, and other activities may require brighter lighting due to declining visual acuity.

Prior to the introduction of Valeda Light Therapy, treatment options for Dry AMD were limited, focusing on early detection and preventive measures to minimize its impact on vision.

Valeda Light Therapy Explained

The Valeda light therapy harnesses various wavelengths of LED light to target cells and boost their activity, thereby slowing down the degenerative process.

Through enhancing energy production within the eye’s cells, Valeda improves their efficiency in performing their functions.

This promotion of cellular health is essential for sustaining optimal eye health.

Patients usually undergo treatments three times a week for a three-week cycle.

Are You Suitable for Valeda Light Therapy?

Valeda is recommended for individuals with Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Patients undergoing therapy should have received a diagnosis of Dry AMD from an eye care professional.

Typically affecting individuals aged 50 and older, Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration patients are suitable candidates for the Valeda Light Therapy System.

If you are interested in learning more about Valeda, you can schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our specialists.

During this consultation, we will have a thorough discussion about your diagnosis and work together to create a personalised treatment plan.

How we treat you with Valeda Light Therapy

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you must remove them before the Valeda treatment. Failure to do so may interfere with the treatment process and could potentially lead to suboptimal results.

Unlike most laser and cataract surgeries, no dilation of the eyes is required for the Valeda treatment. This is because the Valeda treatment uses a different approach that does not necessitate eye dilation, ensuring a more comfortable experience for the patient.

The Valeda treatment, is overseen by our qualified and skilled team here at Dolphins, follows a straightforward process that typically takes less than 5 minutes.

You will be comfortably seated in front of the Valeda Light Delivery System, ensuring a convenient and stress-free experience.

After the Valeda treatment, you may experience a temporary afterimage due to photo stress.

However, this effect typically resolves within a few minutes, allowing you to resume your regular activities without delay.

This quick recovery time should instill confidence in the effectiveness of the treatment.

Treatment for both eyes is completed within a time frame of less than 10 minutes.

In a recent clinical study, patients received a maximum of three treatments per week and no more than one treatment within 24 hours.

If a treatment is missed, it is advised to make up the session within the 3–4-week treatment series period.

Expectations of VLT Therapy

Clinical studies indicate that Valeda therapy improves overall visual function, showcasing enhancements in eye chart scores and detailed vision.

Photographic imaging shows positive developments in eye scans, specifically in reducing or improving drusen, protein deposits commonly found in diseased eyes.

Based on the findings of clinical trials, a suggested treatment plan consists of 3 sessions per week for 3-4 weeks for Dry AMD patients.

This information can be further discussed with Dolphins Optometrists for further guidance.
